A new Gallup study found that only 30% of company managers are engaged at work; the percentage of global employees who are engaged was at 23%. The percentage who are actively disengaged is down to 15%, and those not engaged stands at 62%.
Gallup defines employee engagement as the involvement and enthusiasm of employees in their work and workplace.
As managers, we need to address these numbers..
To reverse the trend of poor engagement among employees and managers, consider implementing the following strategies:
Connect Work to Purpose: Ensure that employees understand how their work contributes to the company’s mission and values. This connection can foster a sense of belonging and purpose.
Value Employees’ Unique Perspectives: Create a culture where every employee feels heard and valued. Encourage open communication and implement suggestions from employees to show that their opinions matter.
Promote Work-Life Balance: Support flexible work arrangements and respect employees’ time off. A healthy balance can lead to more energized and dedicated employees.
Offer Growth Opportunities: Provide clear career paths and development opportunities. Employees are more engaged when they see a future for themselves within the company.
Recognize and Reward: Acknowledge employees’ achievements with recognition and rewards. This can include both financial incentives and additional time off.
Foster Transparency: Maintain open lines of communication about company performance and future plans. Transparency can build trust and reduce uncertainty.
Empower Managers: Equip managers with the autonomy to make decisions and the opportunity to learn new skills. Recognizing their leadership can boost their engagement.
Address Emotional Well-being: Provide resources for mental health and stress management. Acknowledging and supporting managers’ emotional well-being can reduce negative feelings.
Encourage Internal Mobility: Promote from within whenever possible. This not only motivates employees but also ensures that managers are familiar with the company culture and processes.
Embrace Technology: Invest in tools that facilitate collaboration and efficiency. The right technology can make work more enjoyable and less stressful.
By focusing on these areas, you can create a more engaging and supportive work environment that can help reverse the trend of disengagement.
